Rev. Joya was ordained to ministry in the United Church of Christ in 2017. She is passionate about religious education, social justice, and cultivating meaningful faith practices for children/youth/adults. She believes that Christians are called to put God's 'love-into-action' through centered acts of kindness, service, and justice. Joya is a native New Yorker with a background in (faith-based) community organizing, (faith-based) global humanitarian aid, and parish ministry. She has earned degrees from Oberlin College (2002) and New York Theological Seminary (2012), and is currently a Doctor of Ministry Student at Fordham University. She is married to Charisa Kiyo Smith, and together they delight in all the joys of parenting two young children.
