1970’s

January 26, 1970: Mrs. Robert (June) Lumby is elected Moderator – the first female Moderator

for our church.

June 2, 1970: In a special corporate meeting, The Rev. Dr. Roger W. Johnson is called as Minister Pastor.

March 17, 1971: In an “ecumenical first” the combined choirs of the Scarsdale Congregational Church, the Scarsdale Community Baptist Church, Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, Greenville Community Reformed Church and St. Pius X present Durufle’s Requiem, directed by Claire v. g. Thomas.

September 3, 1972: John Frederick Schuder, the new Director of Music, plays for the Union Service. In May he graduated from Union Theological Seminar with a Master of Sacred Music and was accepted for study toward a Doctorate of Musical Arts. John Schuder succeeds Claire v. g. Thomas who returned to her hometown of Lynden WA.

October 14, 1973: The congregation votes to call Gary Pierce Brown as Minister Teacher. January 13, 1974: The Bulletin begins to list “Ministers – All The People”, below which are listed the clergy.

October 20, 1974: We celebrate fifty years as an independent congregation. Seven of the 1924 Charter Members participate in the celebration.

Christmas Eve 1974: The organ stops functioning, after which a team headed by Fran Keeffe and Ruby Berle leads a fund-raising drive that produces individual gifts and fund-raisers sufficient to raise the $100,000 necessary to finance a new, three-manual Austin pipe organ. John Schuder plays the new organ at its November 9, 1975 dedication.

January 9, 1977: The Bulletin reports Ruby Woosnam will work with Gayle Garrison and the morning three-year-old Nursery School class. “She has been working with Gayle since the fall.”

August 1 – 15, 1977: Gary Brown conducts an interfaith Israel study tour.

January 29, 1979: From headquarters in the Marsh Room under the Sanctuary, Meals on Wheels opens for business with ten clients.

November 16, 17, 18, 1979: Chancel Players present “Wait Until Dark” produced by Pat Lilly, Lois Seulowitz and Dave Kimble, directed by Kurt Brokaw.
